Corporal Mahinda Edirisooriya Regains Eye Sight after 18 years

Corporal Mahinda Eidirisooriya lost both hands and both eyes in a route clearing operation in 1991 when he was only 20 years of age. He met his loving wife after the injury and now they have two young sons aged 14 and 5. Mahinda who has been blind for the past 18 years has not seen his children nor his wife.

He was examined by Dr. Rajesh Fogla at the Lanka Hospitals and was advised that he could regain sight in one eye by undergoing a Boston Keratopathesis surgery.

Mahinda underwent surgery on 01st-September-2010, and three weeks later, several members of the Ranaviru Fund visited Mahinda at his residence. Mahinda described to us that he’s noticing an improvement everyday. He told us with excitement that he could identify the shape of the grills when the morning sunlight comes through the window into his room. Mahinda anxiously awaits the healing of surgical wounds to see his loving wife and two sons for the very first time.

Mahinda With Youngest Son
Mahinda with his youngest son three weeks after the surgery.

During our visit, we witnessed first hand that Mahinda’s house has no flooring, plastering, doors, windows or grills, barring their bedroom. On our suggestion, utilising the balance of approximately Rs.30,000.00 from funds raised for the surgery, Damayanthie had tiled their bedroom floor, which is now swept and mopped regularly to reduce dust levels within the room.
